The degrees of freedom of a physical system is the minimum number of variables that can describe the position of the system.

In Hamiltonian mechanics

In Hamiltonian mechanics, the system has as many degrees of freedom as the number of canonical coordinates in the arguments of the Hamiltonian function. It also has just exactly as many momenta as well.
